October already? I don't know about you but I'd almost swear that yesterday was July. But it's that monthly time again to dive into the minds of the doulas at TDS. So get your PSL or apple cider and cozy up for a read. This month on deck we actually have our wonderful administrative assistant and student/future doula, Mayson Fenton of Carterville, IL! Let's get to know her below.

So Mayson, you're a student doula. How long have you been working towards certification and how much longer do you think you have left? M: "I've been reading the training materials for the past couple of months and I'm taking time to absorb the depth and heart of the work. My goal is to be certified and supporting clients by next year!" What inspired you to become a doula?
M: "When I saw how deeply birth can shape us. How raw, powerful, and life-altering it is. After what I went through with my first birth experience, I wanted to be the voice whispering, 'you're safe and you're not alone.' Every birth tells a story, and I am honored to help guide and witness such an emotional time!." What's your favorite part of support families during birth or postpartum?
M: It's standing beside them in their most vulnerable moment and holding space for their strength to rise. Encouraging not only the birthing person but the entire family to continue to enjoy every little moment no matter how overwhelming it may seem.
In one sentence, describe your doula philosophy.
M: "My role is to remind you that your body is wise, this moment is yours, and you are never alone in it."
What's one thing you wish every birthing person knew?
M: "I wish every birthing person knew that they are already enough. That the strength to birth, to heal, to choose, to surrender - it's not something they need to earn or prove. It lives in them. Birth isn't just about strength [but also about] trust. Trust in their own voices, in the process (however wild or gentle it may be), and trust that they deserve to be supported, respected, and heard every single step of the way. Their intuition matters. Always!
What's the most memorable moment or knowledge you have gained in your education so far?
M: "That birth isn't just a medical event it's a personal and emotional experience and everyone deserves to be supported with dignity, compassion and choice. Everyone deserves care that honors their story, their body, and their voice."
What do you think makes your support unique?
M: "I listen beyond words, honor intuition and I'll protect the emotional landscape as fiercely as I guard the physical one."
In one word, what does becoming a doula mean to you? M: "Empowering" And that's our (student) doula of the month. :) We look forward to seeing her grow in her new calling and you can bet we'll celebrate her official certification.
