Understanding Insurance Coverage for Doula Services: What You Need to Know
At Trinity Doula Services (TDS), we believe every family deserves high-quality birth and postpartum support. While the cost of doula care can feel like a hurdle, the good news is that more families than ever are finding that insurance plans can help cover doula services.
Here’s what you need to know about getting your doula services reimbursed or covered, and how Trinity Doula Services makes it easy for you.
🌿 Doula Services + Insurance: What’s Covered?
✅ Carrot Fertility: Trinity Doula Services is an approved Carrot Doula Provider. This means that if you have Carrot benefits through your employer, you can use your funds to cover birth and postpartum doula services with us. Carrot is an incredible resource, especially for families in corporate workplaces—check with your HR department if you’re unsure!
✅ Medicaid (Missouri & Illinois): Missouri and Illinois Medicaid plans have begun to reimburse for doula services in some cases. We are actively working with families and Medicaid plans to make this a smooth process.
✅ Private Insurance Plans: Many private insurance companies, including United Healthcare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, and Cigna, have offered partial or full reimbursement for doula services. While coverage is not always guaranteed, families often receive reimbursement after submitting a detailed receipt, letter of medical necessity, and proof of services.
✅ FSA/HSA Accounts: Families can typically use Health Savings Accounts (HSA) or Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) to pay for doula services. TDS provides itemized invoices for easy submission.
✅ Other Reimbursement Sources: Some wellness funds, employer programs, or special grants may offer doula coverage. It’s worth asking your HR or benefits coordinator!
📌 Steps to Advocate for Doula Coverage
Contact Your Insurance: Call the member services number on the back of your card and ask, “Does my plan cover doula services for birth and/or postpartum care?”
Get Documentation: Request a list of what they need to process a reimbursement (usually an itemized invoice, proof of services, and a letter of medical necessity from your provider).
Submit Your Claim: After your doula services, Trinity Doula Services provides you with everything you need to file for reimbursement.
Follow Up: Be persistent! Many families are told “no” at first, but appeals and resubmissions often lead to a partial or full refund.
