We have returned! It's been a while, but we are back once more with a look inside the mind of one of the agency's newest doulas, Jackie Smiley. She's been with TDS for only a few weeks, but has already proven themselves a reliable go-getter committed to supporting families when it is go time! So sit back, turn on some lo-fi tunes, and let's get to know Jackie a little bit better.

How long have you been a doula?
J: "6 years"
What inspired you to become a doula?
J: "After researching childbirth education for 5 years, couples kept asking me to be their doula. I finally said yes and the rest is history!"
What's your favorite part of supporting families during birth or postpartum?
J: "My favorite part of supporting families is getting to help empower the couple as the parents they are and watching them come into their own and get closer in their relationship through that process."
Describe your doula philosophy in one sentence.
J: "Birth is a natural process and I'm here to support you through it."
What's one thing you wish every birthing person knew?
J: "Midwives and doulas improve outcomes."
Share a powerful or memorable moment you've experienced while working as a doula.
J: "Watching a sweet family welcome their baby girl into the world after years of fertility treatments was one birth I'll never forget!"
What do you think makes your support unique?
J: "I think I bring positivity to the birth space as well as a lot of knowledge. As a childbirth educator, I know how to explain things in a way that parents can grasp and make informed decisions upon."
What's one go-to comfort item or technique you always bring with you
J: "My doula bag is full of helpful items, but the most-used item is a small fan."
What's one myth about doulas specifically that you'd like to bust?
J: "That we're confrontational. We need hospitals and medical support at times and while I will advocate for my clients, I am always respectful." And finally, in one word, what does being a doula mean to you? J: "Not one word, but 'servant's heart' ".
